The Wirilda Environment Park is nestled on the banks of the Tyers River with access to the surrounding timber land making the location a favourite spot for many Latrobe Valley communities, local schools and families to enjoy picnics and community activities.
The Wirilda Environment Park Committee is made up of a small band of volunteers who appreciated the assistance from GippsTAFE in 2005 in successfully applying for funding under the Community Jobs Program – Jobs and Training, administered by the Department for Victorian Communities.
The project was supervised by GippsTAFE’s Horticulture Department and included planning and implementing landscape design, removal and planting of trees and shrubs, creation of native garden beds, construction of walking paths, bridges and retaining walls, seats and barbeque tables that gave participants experience and training in the Horticulture industry.

15 participants in the program were selected through the Job Placement Agencies. Combined with a number of generic skills covered in the program that could be utilized in a variety of other employment fields, the Wirilda Environment Park participants who undertook and completed the project and associated training developed their skills to address a skills shortage within the industry and be eligible to apply for employment in Horticulture.
